Grand Rapids Elite Chimney Sweep handles chimney rebuild in Grand Rapids, MI, taking down only the brick that has failed and laying it back up straight, plumb and tight.

A partial rebuild above the roof typically costs $2,000 to $6,500, and a full rebuild down to the firebox runs $6,000 to $12,000 and up. Most chimneys need neither. A rebuild is like replacing the rotten top of a fence post: the sound part stays and the rotten part goes. We stage our rebuilds from a platform 3 feet below the work, so nothing drops onto your roof.
We rebuild when bricks are loose all the way down, the stack leans, or spalling goes deeper than tuckpointing can fix. Until we've seen it on the roof, we won't call it. A camera scan of the flue and a close look at the brick come first, and you'll see the pictures. We plan a partial rebuild over 2 or 3 days, and our quote lists every course of brick we expect to replace.

Questions?Contact UsThe size of the rebuild depends on how far down the damage goes. We take down only what has to come down.
Down to a sound course of brick, usually just above the roof line, then back up with new brick, a new crown and a cap. This is the most common rebuild we quote.
Takes the chimney down to the firebox and builds it back, with a new liner where the old one can't be saved. It's the big job, and we say so only when the scan and the roof look call for it.
A chimney that leans is moving. If the tilt is in the top rows, a partial rebuild fixes it. If it's lower, we look at the footing and the framing first.
Every rebuild gets a fresh sloped crown at the top, and a stainless steel cap over the flue. See chimney crown repair and chimney cap installation.
We match brick color and size as close as the supplies allow. Reused bricks that are sound go back on the front faces, and new ones fill in at the back.
If tuckpointing and a few new bricks will do, we say so. A tuckpointing job costs a fraction of a rebuild, and we'd rather lose the bigger job than sell it.
Typical Grand Rapids ranges for 2026, not a quote. Height, brick type and access change the price.
| Scope | When it fits | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Partial rebuild | Bad brick in the top rows or just above the roof | $2,000 to $6,500 |
| Full rebuild | Bad brick or a failed flue all the way to the firebox | $6,000 to $12,000 and up |
| Leaning chimney | A visible tilt, gaps at the roof line | Quoted after the scan |
If your chimney leans, stop using the fireplace until we've looked. A tilt that grows is not something to wait out.
The camera scan covers the inside, and the roof look covers the outside. If the brick is sound and the mortar is the problem, we tuckpoint. If the brick has gone soft or the stack has moved, we take it down. Our crew would rather say "you're fine, come back next fall" than quote a rebuild you don't need.
The crew sets a platform, takes the failed brick down to a sound course and cleans off the old mortar. Then it goes back up one course at a time with new mortar, checked with a level as it rises. The crown and the cap go on last. A partial rebuild usually takes a few days.
On a 1960s ranch in Rockford, the top six feet of brick had spalled away, and the original brick was no longer made. We took it down to sound brick, saved the good ones for the front faces and matched the rest. From the street it looks like it was always that way.
A leak, a crack or a crumbling joint usually starts the story. See chimney leak repair if water is the problem, and chimney liner installation if the flue inside is cracked too.
A digital report of the camera scan with photos, and repair quotes you can read at the kitchen table. Nothing gets booked until you say so.
A partial chimney rebuild above the roof in Grand Rapids typically costs $2,000 to $6,500, and a full rebuild down to the firebox typically runs $6,000 to $12,000 and up. Height, brick type and roof access change the price. A camera scan and roof look come before any quote.
When bricks are loose all the way down, the stack leans, or spalling has gone deeper than the face of the brick. Tuckpointing at $600 to $2,800 fixes mortar, but it can't straighten a leaning stack or save soft brick. A close look on the roof tells us which one you have.
A partial rebuild takes the chimney down to a sound course of brick, usually just above the roof line, and rebuilds it with new mortar, a new crown and a cap. It typically costs $2,000 to $6,500 and takes a few days. Most rebuilds we quote are partial.
It can be. A chimney that leans is moving, and a tilt that grows can pull away from the house and crack the flue. Stop using the fireplace until we've looked. If the tilt is only in the top rows, a partial rebuild at about $2,000 to $6,500 can fix it.
A partial rebuild usually takes a few days, and a full rebuild takes longer because the whole stack comes down to the firebox. Mortar needs temperatures above freezing to cure, so cold weather can add days. The crew sets a platform first and works course by course.
Usually close. We match color and size as best the supplies allow, reuse sound original bricks on the front faces and put the new ones at the back. Very old or unusual brick can take more hunting. If we can't get close, we show you samples before we start.
